Birds reproduce through insemination, but do not have sexual organs similar to mammals. Both males and females have what is called a cloaca. It's an internal chamber that produces sperm (male), or receives sperm to fertilize an egg (female). By connecting outside of the two cloaca, sperm is transferred. Birds are therefore oviparous, which means they lay eggs. Birds can lay eggs without being fertilized. The number of eggs range from one to a dozen at a time, and in the case of certain birds, such as chickens, eggs are produced every few hours.
