Follow the 3 easy steps to help you read and learn more about crustaceans, how to work with them, and how to gain experience, everything while having a huge amount of fun! 1. DEFINITION OF crustaceansCrustaceans are generally aquatic and differ from other arthropods in having two pairs of appendages (antennules and antennae) in front of the mouth and paired appendages near the mouth that function as jaws
2. BASIC FACTSOrigin: It is assumed that crustaceans originated from a common ancestor at around 530 million years ago. Habitat: Fresh and salt water all around the world, as well as a few species on land. Size: Size differs greatly, from the American lobster, which can reach a weight of 20 kilograms (44 pounds) and the Japanese spider crab with a leg span of 3.7 metres (12 ft), to the smallest, the 100-micrometre-long (0.004 in) Stygotantulus stocki. Lifespan: The lifespan of crustaceans can range from a few weeks, to more than 50 years for certain lobster species. Reproduction: Most of the crustacean species produce sexually through a male and female. However, there are some species which are hermaphrodites as well as some that are even capable of changing gender. Most species produce eggs that are fertilized by the male, but some crustaceans are parthenogenetic; that is, they produce eggs that develop without being fertilized by a sperm. When hatched, the crustaceans go through a larvae stage (or more than one) while they also display special appendages, known as nauplius. Diet: Diet varies according to species. 3.
