1. DEFINITION OF dogs
Dogs are the oldest domesticated four-legged animals (they have adapted to being with humans), which are used as pets, for herding sheep, protection and even for guiding people that are blind.
Scientific Name: [Canis familiaris]
A male dog is called a dog, the female a bitch, and the young is called a pup, or puppy. A group of dogs are called a pack.

Dutch: hond French: chien
Spanish: perro Turkish: köpek
2. BASIC FACTS
Wolves (Canis lupus) were the first animal to be domesticated by people, some time between 15,000 and 50,000 years ago. The domesticated wolves are the ancestors of our dogs. It is assumed that the first domesticated wolves originate from from Europe or Asia.
There are around 400 recognized breeds.
It's estimated that there are 900 million dogs in the world. The United States is the country with the highest amount of dogs, with the last estimated standing at 75.8 million.

From 6.3 cm (2.5 in) to 106.7 cm (42.0 in) at the shoulder
From 9.5 cm (3.7 in) to 250 cm (98 in) in length along the head-and-body
Weight between 113 grams (4.0 oz) to 155.6 kg (343 lb)
Differs greatly, but average 13 years
Average litter size = 6 puppies
(Time for puppy to form before birth) Average 63 days
Mainly carnivorous (meat eating). Pet dogs eat mainly prepared food.
