Although fish have for the largest part been seen as food and certain species have gradually been adopted by families as pets. Fishkeepers use aquariums to keep fish, invertebrates, amphibians, aquatic reptiles such as turtles, and aquatic plants.
2. BASIC FACTS
It is assumed that fish originated from a common ancestor at around 530 million years ago.
Fresh and salt water all around the world.
There are approximately 33,600 described species. There are an estimated 3,500,000,000,000 (3.5 trillion) fish in the ocean. This is a huge amount of fish, especially since there has been a drastic declined by over 50% since 1970.
The world's smallest fish is Paedocypris progenetica from the forest swamps on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Adults measure just 0.3 inches (7.9 mm) in length. The whale shark is the largest known fish species with a total length of up to 41.5 feet (12.6 m).
Freshwater - between 1 and 15 years, Saltwater - 2 to 20 years
Over 97% of all known fish are oviparous with soft gell-like eggs or casings. In a very small amount of fish (livebearers) the young develop internally and are delivered live. The newly hatched young of oviparous fish are called larvae. They are usually poorly formed, carry a large yolk sac (for nourishment), and are very different in appearance from juvenile and adult specimens.
The length of pregnancy in a fish varies greatly depending on the species of fish. The length of pregnancy, or gestation period, can vary from as little as three weeks to ten months.
Diet varies according to species.
